Before the Renovation
Owner Jackie explains how it all came about.
Back in 2015, whilst out walking with my husband John, he pointed out an old terraced house for sale next to the Railway Pub, which had years before been a newsagents. ‘That would make a great café’ he said.
It was a passing comment, yet in July 2017, down to some sheer madness and against all the odds – having had no experience of setting up a business and the building almost being rebuilt from scratch – Station Brew opened its doors to the public.
When I reflect on our journey I can see where it came from. Me, someone who loved to feed people good home cooked food and to organise parties, and my husband, an engineer who loved a project … and we certainly got that!
Help from Friends & Family
Builder Ed and a huge team of local tradesmen got to work transforming the place.
We roped in our daughter Sophie as manager to help us open, along with life long friend Janat and her husband Pete who luckily happened to be an architect.
It certainly could never have happened without huge amounts of help from friends and family, and new friends we made; our wonderful supportive staff, owners of other local cafes and suppliers who helped us so much along the way.
We wanted to create a café with a warm, comfortable, friendly atmosphere in which to enjoy good, home cooked food.
Finally, inside the Cafe
We liked the idea of having books, maps and games to enjoy while taking in the amazing view of Chew Valley from the back room. We upcycled some of the original features of the building and incorporated them into the cafe, including the counter and fireplace, as well as sourcing second hand furniture to upcycle, creating a quirky feel.
As many of our long standing customers will know, my husband John sadly died suddenly just a few months after we opened. We were determined to continue his legacy and we think he’d be proud to see the café having gone from strength to strength.
Station Brew Apartment
The renovation of the building resulted not only in the creation of our café, but also in a new apartment above, with stunning views across Chew Valley. It is a popular choice for people visiting the area and can be booked via the Airbnb website where you can also make enquiries before booking. (Our café staff can’t help with this).
